lanaire’s first film, an evening with verse writer: a documentary by lanaire aderemi, chronicles the process of developing her play of the same name from an anthology of journal entries. through interviews, rehearsal footage, and more, the film gives viewers a behind the scenes look at the journey from page to stage, and shows the work and collaboration necessary to transform her art from poems to interactive performances.

in a world where black women and their work continue to be erased from historical record, archiving and documenting black women’s voices is a political act. with this film, lanaire provides an intimate revelation of her creative process, and reiterates that the personal is political.
